Biohybrid Architectures: Histories, Practices and Futures

Date: December 12th
Time: 13.00 - 17.00
Location: Det Kongelige Akademi, Danneskiold-Samsøes Allé 51 Auditorium 1, Indgang J&K 1435 København K, Denmark

Lecture organized by The Danish Royal Acadamy.

The lecture marks Phil Ayres’ appointment in 2022 as Professor of Biohybrid Architecture at the Institute of Architecture and Technology.

Biohybrid systems couple the biological and the engineered to create blended entities with the aim of satisfying goal oriented and/or exploratory objectives. In his inaugural lecture, Professor Phil Ayres will explore biohybrids in an architectural context, revealing a rich and cross-disciplinary history, their contemporary relevance and future prospects.

This will be animated through reference to research conducted within the Chair for Biohybrid Architecture where the fundamental technologies of weaving and fermentation act as a basis for enquiry.

Biohybrid architecture is an emerging field that integrates living organisms, such as plants and fungi, with digital and technical systems to develop new, sustainable building materials and architectural solutions. This approach leverages the unique properties of biological systems – such as growth, self-repair, and environmental adaptability – allowing architecture to become dynamic and responsive over time.

This event is FREE.
