Event organized by The Danish Royal Academy.

Open lecture with one of the most significant European architects of recent times, Stephen Bates (Sergison Bates Architects).

Sergison Bates Architects is a British architectural practice established in 1996 by Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates. The firm’s first projects included a pub, a social housing development, a small townhouse, and the transformation of a former factory into residential housing – all projects with great attention to the specific location, material effects, and meaning-making detail.

Today, the firm employs 35 people across offices in London, Zurich, and Brussels. Their projects include large-scale residential developments in Brussels, Paris, Zurich, Antwerp, and Munich, as well as the ongoing major transformation project converting the former Citroën factory in Brussels into the Kanal-Pompidou Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

As the practice itself puts it, questions of sustainability must be part of the way we think about building for an uncertain future. This includes a holistic view of the building system as composed of a series of layers, each with its own temporal dimension, enabling a long lifespan on the urban scale and a shorter lifespan for the building’s internal systems.

An important part of the firm’s work includes investigations into how materials and technologies can help create a particular atmosphere. Their critical practice also involves teaching, writing, and publishing books, which has had a significant influence on the development of architecture as a building art, including at the Royal Danish Academy.
